Members of the Transport Working Groups of the CPMR’s North Sea Commission (NSC) and Baltic Sea Commission (BSC) held a joint meeting on 5-6 April in Stockholm. The event offered the chance to share best practises and to develop common actions.
The chair of the BSC Transport Working Group, Mr Kai Holmberg, and the chair of the NSC Transport Working Group, Preben Friis-Hauge, outlined the history of good cooperation between the two groups, starting in 2001.
During the meeting, each transport group presented its respective areas of work and priorities and provided an update about their recent activities. The NSC transport work group has been focusing its work on clean transport, clean shipping, the optimisation of the performance of multimodal logistic chains and the development of multimodal transport corridors. For 2017-2019, the BSC transport working group has set out as priority the revision of the regulation of the Connecting Europe Facility, the Trans-European Transport network corridors, aviation and third country connection.
The Chair of the BSC transport working group explained that all of the transport working group’s activities should support the objective of “increasing accessibility” of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. Patrick Anvroin, Director for Transport at the CPMR Secretariat, updated participants about the CPMR’s recent work related to Transport such as issues related to TEN-T and CEF corridors, and aviation.
During the meeting, it was also underlined that 2018 is a crucial year for the future of European Transport Policy as the European Commission will present on 2 May its legislative proposal on the future EU budget. Patrick Anvroin recalled the political messages on transport included in the CPMR policy position on the future of the EU budget adopted at the last CPMR Political Bureau in Patras (Greece).
In conclusions, the chairs of the transport working groups underlined the importance of continuing the good cooperation and continue explore synergies between the two groups.
